A group of us were heading up to the mountains for a birthday celebration weekend at Deep Pass. Some of us went up on Friday afternoon to photograph the sunset at Katoomba. We camped the night on Narrow Neck, so we could also photograph the sunrise.
Four of us headed to Boars Head for the sunset – Digi Dave, Don, Elata and myself. It was a cloudy day – so the prospects were not that good for a nice sunset. But a thin strip of clear sky near the western horizon had some promise.
The so called “golden hour” only lasted a minute or two hen the sun shone through that small gap. It was nice but could have lasted longer.
At Katoomba shops we met up with more friends and then headed out to camp near the barrier on Narrow Neck. This is a high place – but is well protected by a thicket of trees.
I got up before sunrise and walked out past the barrier for a few minutes and then followed a rough track to a good lookout on the eastern cliff line.
The sunrise was the opposite to the sunset. It was a clear day, except for a small band of cloud on the eastern horizon – so the sun’s rays were somewhat delayed hitting the cliffs. There was no mist in the Jamison Valley – but there was an interesting haze that added some depth to photos.
A little after the sun rose, Don and Elata joined me on the cliff. It was a nice morning and it heralded a very nice weekend.
