Deep Pass – Birthday Weekend 11-12 October 2014

A large group of friends headed up to Deep Pass. We had three birthdays to celebrate – and Deep Pass is not only a great campsite – it has many interesting places nearby to visit. Wildflowers, birds, canyons, cracks and aboriginal art caves. It requires a walk (only a short walk) – so it is usually not crowded.

After walking down and setting up camp, a group of us headed up nearby Deep Pass Canyon. This is easy and very beautiful. It contains many deep crystal clear pools. Too cold for swimming however for most of us.

Later in the afternoon, we visited one of the aboriginal art caves in the vicinity. This features a few faint hand stencils.

The it was a big party that went late into the evening. We had lots of great food and drink that we all shared. It was a great evening!

Next morning, I was in a group that visited The River Caves Canyon. This can be reader by a track that leaves a short way down the creek from the campsite. The track crosses the creek and climbs  up a steep gully to reach a pagoda ridge. Then in goes up the ridge to eventually join an old fire road. Not far along that it joins the Mt Cameron Track not far before the Natural Bridge. This took us about 50 minutes. We only had to go about 50 m along the Cameron Track before we met the turn-off to the track down to the River Caves. And then it is another 20 minutes to the canyon.

The canyon was dark and gloomy – and I had to hunt around to get some good angles for photography. Most of the lighting was too harsh and contrasty. But the reflected light was nice.

After the canyon we walked back to Deep Pass, and then eventually packed up and headed for home.

As well as the canyons, the wild flowers were particularly striking.
