I was able to take part on the monthly Greenway Bird Survey – the loop from Waratah Mills Light Rail Station. It was good to catch up with the group again, and we saw quite a few birds.
We saw quite a few Red Wattlebirds. Here are some –
And here are some Pacific Koels –
And a Pied Currawong –
And one of several Sparrows –
Here is a juvenile Black-faced Cuckoo-shrike –
One of there group, David, managed to spot a very distant high flying Darter –
Here is a Superb Fairy-wren –
Some Australasian Figbirds –
A New Holland Honeyeater –
And lastly, a Willie Wagtail –
We then fished off with coffee. After that, I was joined by Valerie for a walk along a section of the Cooks River. We wanted to see if we could see any Tawny Frogmouth chicks that had hatched.
We quickly found the nest at the Boat Harbour, but could not see any chicks. The bird (the male) did seem a bit restless – which could indicate he is sitting on a chick or two.
The female was perched in another tree nearby.
Here is a swoops Noisy Miner. They must be besting.
On the far side of the river, we inspected a Magpie Lark nest –
But the nearby Willie Wagtail nest was empty.
But we soon spotted the two chicks nearby. They were calling for food. Here is one of them –
Here the parent is distracted by an insect that flies too close.
