I joined local birder, Michael, for a day at Nurragingy Reserve at Doonside, then on the way home, we called into Sydney Olympic Park for a look.
Nurragingy Reserve
At Nurragingy, we first visited the main ponds. Here we saw a pair of juvenile Australasian Grebes.
We then started looking for Kingfishers. We spotted a Raven with stone in its beak. At one time I saw the Raven bang the stone in part of the tree. Was it using it as a tool? Or perhaps trying to break the stone open, thinking it was an egg?
We heard a Whipbird calling. We looked and only got a filtered view of it –
We slowly walked around the perimeter fire road twice, and bot times it was fairly quiet for birds.
Grey Fantail
Eastern Spinebill
Black-faced Cuckoo-shrike
Eastern Yellow Robin
Yellow Thornbill
Kingfishers? We did not see any Sacred Kingfishers, but got a brief glimpse of an Azure Kingfisher. Too brief for me to get a photo.
We then had lunch and though about heading home via Sydney Olympic Park.
Pacific Black Duck
Sydney Olympic Park
We first visited Wentworth Common, but did not find too many birds of interest.
This is one of pair of Great Egrets hunting in Haslams Creek –
We next visited Lake Belvedere in Bicentennial Park.
Black Swan
Pied Cormorant chicks
Great Egret
Pied Cormorant
And a Turtle –
Time to head home. It had been a nice day out, and thanks to Michael for driving.
