Blue Mountains Heritage Walk – 2 June 2022

This was a very interesting walk with Bob and we were joined by Peter. Our plan was to look at some Aboriginal sites in the Blue Mountains. It was an area that Bob and myself had explored before for Aboriginal sites and so had Peter, and this time we would compare notes to get a bigger picture. A lot of these sites are sensitive so I will not detail the specific locations.

The sites we visited included sharpening grooves, rock engravings and also pigment and charcoal art in caves.

Here are some sharpening grooves we found early on –

Bob below is inserting some possible sharpening grooves –

Peter is looking at some faint ochre art in an overhang –

In nearby overhangs were some very faint hand stencils –

Peter showed us this rock engraving site. It had five engravings of echidnas. Most prominent was this double echidna engraving –

Much fainter were the other four echidna engravings –

There were also quite a few emu footprint engravings –

We then visited an overhang that features some charcoal art –

Our next site was an overhang that featured about ten hand stencils. Most were red hands.

The above photo shows eight stencils. Another fainter one is below –

And one was this very faint white hand stencil –

It wa san interesting area to explore with nice woodlands and some open areas.

We looked at a lot of these open rocky areas –

Is this an engraving of a single Kangaroo footprint or just a natural mark?

Some of Natures art was pretty impressive too –

And walking back we spotted some Gang Gang Cockatoos –

A great day out.
