Birds at Sydney Olympic Park – 22 July 2022

The run of wet weather was continuing. With this in mind, I headed to Sydney Olympic Park – where the paths would not be bogs and where there is also some shelter. This worked out well.

I started at the Mason Park Wetlands. Here are some birds I saw there –

Chestnut Teal

Australasian Grebe

Black Swan on nest

At Lake Belvedere, there were a lot of Ibis, and a few other birds. Here is a Great Cormorant.

Hardhead

Moving on to the Bennelong Ponds, I photographed this Red-browed Finch.

Superb Fairy-wren

Pied Cormorant

I then continued to the Waterbird Refuge. Here are some of the birds –

Great Egret

Bar-tailed Godwits

Pacific Black Duck

Australasian Grebe

I was sheltering at one of the undercover picnic tables when I heard a major disturbance. In a tree near me about a dozen Noisy Miners and several Magpies were calling out in a big way. I saw this angry Magpie and I thought it may be raiding a Noisy Miner nest, but that was not the case.

I then spotted a Barn Owl in the tree. All the other birds were trying to drive it away and they succeeded. It soon flew away accompanied by the posse.

Time to slowly head back. These next photos were all taken in the Waterbird Refuge.

At the south end of the Waterbird Refuge, I watched this White-faced Heron hunting in the shallow water.
