Wolli Creek – Cooks River Walk – 23 August 2022

Another day of Rail chaos. And this time, rain was forecast later in the day – perhaps late morning. So I decided on another local trip and caught a bus to Bexley North and set off down the Two Valleys Track along Wolli Creek.

I stopped to photograph some small birds at Illoura. Here is one of the many Red-browed Finches

And there were lot of Superb Fairy-wrens

There were also quite a few Grey Fantails. Here is one –

And a Laughing Kookaburra

At the Bray Avenue Wetland, I spotted a distant Brown Goshawk

I looked for Tiny Frogmouths in Girrahween Park, but had not success. I saw this growing in a tree, and wondered whether it is the orchid Cymbidium suave?

And there were some Rosellas.

Eastern Rosella

Crimson Rosella

Here is a Willie Wagtail hunting for insects –

Further along, I saw this Brown Gerygone

New Holland Honeyeaters

The rock orchids above the old swimming pool were not yet in flower.

Grey-headed Flying Foxes

Here is a large nest in a tree in the bus depot opposite Jackson Place. I don’t know what birds built it and whether it will be used again.

I continued to Waterworth Park, then up the Cooks River through Gough Whitlam Park and then headed towards Illawarra Road. Then I ran into fellow bird photographer, Michael, who had spotted a Sacred Kingfisher. I joined him until it started raining.

When a Kingfisher perches in one spot for a while, it is probably waiting to cough up a pellet. This was certainly the case here.

It returned with a nice crab.

With rain on the way, Michael and myself headed to the bus stop on Illawarra Road.
