Visit to Oatley Park – 4 October 2022

The day before, I had suggested to Valerie and Sue that we take advantage of the good weather while it lasts and visit Oatley Park. I thought there may be some orchids out, and there is usually good range of birds. Both were keen to come along and we had a very nice day.

I was right about the orchids. We spotted many Bearded Orchids as we wandered around the tracks.

And there were other flowers out –

And a Bearded Orchid (Calochilus sp.)

Down at the wetlands in Lime Kiln Bay, we saw some Australian Wood Duck chicks –

And here is an Australasian Grebe

Water Dragon

And back to the Grebe –

And a Pied Cormorant

And this is a Chestnut Teal chick –

Above, a Little Wattlebird

on the track on the west side of the wetlands, we saw a Grey Butcherbird sitting on a nest –

A few more birds along the track –

Silvereye

Laughing Kookaburra

Golden Whistler

Sacred Kingfisher

Crimson Rosella

Striated Thornbill

Black-faced Monarch

And a different orchid – Caladenia sp.

Valerie recognised this as a Bossiaea sp.

Another Sacred Kingfisher

More Bearded Orchids

These were all growing close to the track around the headland.

Variegated Fairy-wren

And we visited an Aboriginal Art cave –

We could see the Ospreys on their nest at Lugano –

Another Striated Thornbill

And a Spotted Pardalote

It had been a nice day! We finished with coffee and chocolate at Adora in Oatley.

Once again – many thanks to Valerie for a lift down and back.
