Visit to Long Reef – 9 October 2022

I was invited by good friends John and Chuin Nee to accompany them and their two sons, and another family on a visit to Long Reef. The weather was fine and the tide was low in the early afternoon – so it looked like a good opportunity.

We had pleasant day – spent mostly out on the rock platform. I took my bird camera and was able to observe and photograph a good range of birds.

We started off at the Long Reef Surf Club car park, where we had lunch, then walked out, past the golf course to the lookout. On the way I photographed a Superb Fairy-wren

Once on the rock platform, I could see a flock of flying Red-necked Stints

And here is a Ruddy Turnstone

A closer Red-necked Stint

Amongst them were a few Sharp-tailed Sandpipers

One of the local Ospreys flew past, but did not linger.

And there were plenty of Crested Terns.

Here is another Ruddy Turnstone –

And a Red-necked Stint

More Ruddy Turnstones –

And more Red-necked Stints

And some photos of a Sharp-tailed Sandpiper in flight –

Then a brief reappearance by the Osprey.

We then left the rock platform and walked around the north side of the Headland. In the distance an old ship was floundering.

The kids liked playing on the sand dunes –

And then the Osprey made a reappearance and a nice fly past –

Some washed up Blue Bottles –

Here is one of three Sooty Oystercatchers

And then the Osprey was being harassed –

Walking back past the golf course, one of the boys spotted a Nankeen Kestrel

So a nice day out. Thanks to John and Chuin Nee for the invitation.
