Bob and myself were keen to do another heritage walk to look for more Aboriginal Art sites in the Lower Blue Mountains. This time we were joined by Doug.
We set off along a track behind houses. It led to a large stream, that was a former site where water had been pumped out. We could see the odd lump of coal lying around – evidence that there was once steam powered pump in operation.
After crossing the major stream, we walked downstream assort distance past a hole where the entire flow of the creek disappeared.
We then walked up a side creek and then climbed out a pass up through small cliffs onto a ridge system.
Prostanthera sp.
On the climb we encountered lots of wildflowers, including some nice Flannel Flowers.
Native Iris
On the ridge we spotted this huge native cockroach –
We then visited a very good Aboriginal art site. In a small overhang were many red ochre hand stencils.
Many of the hand stencils were very clear, others were fainter –
We then headed down into another creek system. On the way, we found this nice Red Beard Orchid –
And here is a White-browed Scrubwren –
Some Boronia sp. in flower –
We arrived at a nice creek. We walked upstream several kilometres looking for more Aboriginal art sites. We didn’t find any art sites or sharpening grooves, but we did find evidence of an old track that once went along the creek.
We then climbed out – at ascot where there had definitely been an old track. In places we found old stone steps. The track led up to a ridge where there was a fire road, that eventually led towards where Bob had earlier parked his car.
On the walk out, we found a patch of Diuris sp. Orchids –
And a Fringe Lily –
Limited success in finding art sites, but we did find some old tracks, and we had a very nice walk.
