Another afternoon visit to the Headland. This time I was joined by Sue – and we ended up having a very quiet visit.
We met at Maroubra Beach about 2:15 pm and walked out towards Boora Point. Near Dead Mans Gulch, I spotted an adult Peregrine falcon flying from the Magic Point area towards the Rifle Range.
We then looked along the cliffs for the juveniles, but had no luck spotting them.
Coming past were a pair of Royal Australian Navy Landing Craft. Here is one –
And far out at sea, we could see a lot (hundreds) of Shearwaters.
Some other photographers, including William and Wayne arrived. Later one of them spotted an adult perched on the cliffs, a long way off –
It later moved a bit further along.
And not long after, it took off and flew into the Rifle Range area.
I had spotted a Peregrine much closer earlier flying below the cliffs. But that was about all our Falcon encounters this visit.
We made our way back to Maroubra Beach about 5:30, and on the way back, I spotted a black bird not far off Magic Point. It was a Wedge-tailed Shearwater. Thanks to Sam for the i.d.
And here is an Australian Reed Warbler at the sediment pond near the park gate.
So, a very quiet visit this time. But it is always nice to spend some time in this beautiful environment. And the weather was glorious. There was a light breeze – but perhaps too light to entice the juvenile Peregrine Falcons to fly?
