This day was a bit different to other recent outings. I joined Valerie and Sue for a day spent in the city visiting some new additions to the Museum and Art Gallery, then we visited the Botanic Gardens and later a small park in Dulwich Hill.
Australia Museum – Minerals Gallery
Years ago, there was a very nice but small exhibition of minerals at the Museum. It has now been reinstated in a larger and much improved format. It is well worth a visit.
Art Gallery of NSW – New Northern Building
This new building has recently opened.
There are plenty of decks overlooking the harbour.
The architecture of the new building is very impressive.
This spiral staircase leads down to a basement level known as “The Tank”. It is very dark down below and the spiral steps take a long time to descend allowing our eyes to get used to the dim light.
The Tank features some very unusual sculptures.
Then we headed over to the old building for lunch (their cafe was less crowded), then back to the new building again to see an Aboriginal Art section.
These old photos were dynamic, and gradually changed.
This visit was very worthwhile. We did not see all the art, as we did not want to be overwhelmed. Further visits will be needed. And many of the artworks were dynamic – so photos do not do them justice.
Botanic Gardens
Being close to the Art Gallery, we made a quick visit to the gardens. We first looked for and found the Powerful Owl –
And here is an Australian White Ibis chick –
The Calyx was just about to close for the day, so we made a quick visit. There were lots of nice orchids –
And other colourful plants –
After leaving the Gardens, we walked past the Mitchell Library, and stopped to looked for the “Trim The Cat” sculpture. The Mathew Flinders statue seemed a good place to start.
And then we headed to Dulwich Hill for dinner. On the way, we stopped off at Morton Park, and soon located the resident Tawny Frogmouths –
I think this small reserve is named after a former Mayor of Marrickville.
This had been a full and very pleasant day!
