I joined Brian Everingham and others from the National Parks Association of NSW for a morning of bird photography at Audley in Royal National Park. It was a pleasant outing.
In the party was Brian, Ken, John, Kye, Vivienne and myself. We started at Wattle Flat.
Here we saw some of the usual birds, like this Sulphur-crested Cockatoo –
we scanned the area for Kingfishers, but had no luck.
Pacific Black Ducks
Dusky Moorhen
This Robber Fly that settled on Brian’s hat became a photographic subject. It has some prey.
Brian then spotted a Sacred Kingfisher perched on the far bank –
We could hear plenty of Eastern Whipbirds. Entering the rainforest we spotted some –
Superb Fairy-wren
Black-faced Monarch
Eastern Yellow Robin
Lewin’s Honeyeater
Brown Gerygone
Superb Fairy-wren
Variegated Fairy-wren
Eastern Spinebill
Perhaps a Brown Gerygone –
Brian heard the distinctive call of a Dollarbird. We left the rainforest and spotted it perched high in a tree.
And here is a Mantis Fly –
we then headed downstream below the Varney Bridge.
Great Cormorant
This Sulphur-crested Cockatoo seemed interesting in someone’s lunchbox.
Juvenile Wood Ducks –
Little Pied Cormorant
This was a very pleasant morning. Thanks to Brian for organising and a lift down from the station.
