Why Don’t We Do It In The Road Canyon – 2 February 2023

A hot day was forecast was forecast in the Blue Mountains, so Bob and myself headed up to Mt Wilson to visit Why Don’t We Do In The Road Canyon. It was nice and cool in the canyon, and the walk out is not too strenuous.

We had a very pleasant day.

On the walk to the canyon, we encountered this nice Tiger Snake sunning itself on the fire road.

And we saw a rather old Leek Orchid

It was a bit hazy as we descended to  the creek.

We were soon down the first abseil.

That is followed by a walk of about 20 minutes to the main canyon section. This starts with a nice abseil down a waterfall.

And now we were really in the canyon.

The second abseil in this constriction is down this waterfall –

And the third abseil is down into this pool.

A fallen tree makes photography tricky.

The last bit of the canyon is quite a nice slot.

It is followed by this huge chockstone. It is possible to climb onto the chockstone and scramble up to the top of the last abseil, and also out of the canyon if desired.

Not far downstream, the creek flows into Wollangambe Canyon.

Both Bob and myself remembered visiting a Glow Worm Cave at the bottom of the canyon on our early trips down this section of Wollangambe Canyon. It was a short side trip to see the glow worms. But we tried to do this on this visit – but conditions have changed. It now seems very difficult to get to the cave – behind small waterfall. The only way now would be by abseiling down that waterfall, then doing another abseil or two lower down to get out.

We then followed the ledge upstream to the pass out. At the bottom of the pass, we found shady spot for lunch. The Water Dragons were waiting for our crumbs –

And a bit more Nature on the walk out –

Dragonfly

Mountain Dragon

Horned Orchid

We got back to Bob’s car at the fire station fairly early, so this allowed us to visit some cultural sites on the way home.
