An old bushwalking friend Keith Maxwell had spent a lot of his spare time over the past few years, together with Michael Keats, working on a book on Splendour Rock in the Southern Blue Mountains. The book has now been published and I had the pleasure of attending it launch at Winmalee.
The authors should be commended for the thoroughness of their research. It details the story of the war memorial at Splendour Rock and the World War II servicemen from bushwalking clubs in NSW who died during the war. As well there is a wealth of other information about Splendour Rock and why there are other plaques there.
I will add a book review to this blog when I finish reading it. Copies can be obtained from the Bush Explorer’s Website.
I was grateful to another bushwalking friend, Doug Wheen, for going out of his way to pick me up and give me lift to the venue. Doug’s late uncle plays part in the book.
After the launch, Doug, Bob and myself set off for s short bushwalk in the Glenbrook area to look for an Aboriginal site. We were unsuccessful in finding the site, but we had an interesting walk nevertheless.
We followed an old and largely forgotten track down to a creek, and then explored upstream.
