I had suggested to Valerie and Sue that we do a walk along the Cooks River to keep tabs with the bird life. So we met at Valerie’s place and were soon walking to the river. Our first stop off was the Dibble Street Waterhole.
On recent visit to the waterhole, I had not seen too many birds, so it was a very pleasant surprise to see a Sacred Kingfisher sitting on a post just in the water. It was enjoying the sun.
And we then looked up into a nearby paperbark, where we had previously seen roosting Tawny Frogmouths at times. Well, we were again lucky – we spotted one there today.
Meanwhile, the Kingfisher had vacated the Rostand it place was taken by a Willie Wagtail, which had just caught a moth.
Next, we walked to Marrickville Golf Course and looked for the Tawny Frogmouths that often roost there. We soon spotted three –
One was by itself and the two others were not to each other nearby –
Nearby, a Grey Butcherbird had caught a cicada.
Lower down, near the river, we watched some Welcome Swallows –
We looked but did not spot any Kingfishers along the path just downstream of Illawarra Road.
Further along, near Gough Whitlam Park, we heard an Olive-backed Oriole calling, We eventually spotted two.
At Gough Whitlam Park we stopped to photograph some parrots –
Rainbow Lorikeets
Little Pied Cormorant
And we had brief glimpse at a second Sacred Kingfisher –
King Parrot
We then had morning tea at the cafe in Gough Whitlam Park.
Downstream, on Fatima Island, we spotted this Australasian Darter –
And a last bird – a Pelican –
Thanks to Sue and Valerie for company on the walk and helping with the spotting. Thad been a pleasant morning.
