Tempe and Cooks River Birds – 10 June 2023

I joined the Tempe Birdos for their early morning survey. Being a long weekend, the number of participants was small – so there was only one group that surveyed the Wetlands. Being a cold morning, it was reasonably quiet.

Here are some of the birds we saw.

Pacific Black Ducks

Chestnut Teal

Australasian Grebe and Dusky Moorhen

Red-browed Finch

There were a lot of alarm calls as a Great Egret flew over –

Australasian Grebe

There was a second Grebe in the middle pond.

Red Wattlebird

As usual, the survey finished with morning tea and a chat. I then walked home via the Cooks River. Not far upstream I spotted this Australasian Darter on Fatima Island.

It was one that had been reported the day before to Wires. I had some material caught on its beak. There was another person observing it – Kelly from Sydney Bird Rescue, and also Paul from Wires arrived.

I took a series of photos of the bird, and it showed the material was only on the lower section, so perhaps the bird can manage OK? I left, and not sure what the others did.

More birds on the Cooks River.

Sacred Kingfisher

Little Pied Cormorant

Willie Wagtail

And the Tawny Frogmouths at Marrickville Golf Course –

At the Dibble Avenue Waterhole, there was another Australasian Grebe

I was back home for lunch, and went on another excursion in the afternoon.
