2015 SUBW – PBT – October Long Weekend

During the October Long Weekend (3-5 October) I went on the Sydney University Bushwalkers President’s Bludge Trip to the Kowmung River. This year the club president Kaushalya led the trip to the middle section of the Kowmung River.

From Kanangra Walls, we headed to Gingra Range, along it for a while, and then turned off down Hughes Ridge and this brought us to the Kowmung River at Ferny Flat. Here we camped the first night on a nice grassy flat. We had a swim in the river, but the water was a bit cool.

Its always nice visiting the Kowmung River on a long weekend – as the middle day means you have time to have a relaxing day walking along the river. This year, we headed upstream and spent the morning walking up to the big campsite at Orange Bluff. This section of the Kowmung River is one of my favourite sections. Generally nice open grassy banks. Around each corner is another beautiful pool. A magical place! You do have to cross the river numerous times for the easiest walking – but the river crossings are not too hard unless the river is high.

Orange Bluff must be one of the nicest campsites on the river – with its big grassy flat and on the far side of the river – the big cliff that provides the name.

On Monday, we left the river and walked back out to Kanangra Walls. This was a very hot day, so we continued on to the shade of the Coal Seam Cave for lunch. From there it was a short walk back to Kanangra Walls. Then home, via a break at the Hampton Half Way House for beers and willy burgers.

Thanks to Kaushalya for a great walk. More photos are online on my website here.
