Birds at Sydney Park – 11 October 2023

After the Greenway Bird Survey, I caught a tram to Dulwich Hill then a train to St Peters and spent a couple of hours at Sydney Park. I did not see the interesting birds seen on my previous visit – a Baillon’s Crake, a Latham’s Snipe and a Buff-banded Rail, but I did some other nice birds.

There seemed to be a lot of Turtles in the park –

And this Tawny Frogmouth nest is unchanged –

Little Pied Cormorant

Some Noisy Miners were diving into the water in the lowest pond and washing. They do it once, then often dive in a number of more times 0 giving you the chance to have your camera ready to get some photos –

This one seemed very reluctant to get wet –

There was a pair of Australasian Grebes in the pond –

Another Noisy Miner dive and wash –

And back to the Australasian Grebes –

The Willie Wagtail nest on the island is the same –

Earlier in the day, on the Greenway, we had observed a Willie Wagtail nest in a tree over the Hawthorn Canal. Nearby was a Magpie Lark nest. It was the same here. About 1 m away was a Magpie Lark nest. I wonder if this is a deliberate strategy of both birds to site their nests close to each other for mutual defence?

Then I could hear the raucous sounds of a pair of Channel-billed Cuckoos

I was pleased to spot the Tawny Frogmouths near the depot. I was hoping they were nesting. They had been – and have at least one chick (and probably only one chick).
