Rookwood Necropolis Visit – 15 November 2023

I only had a few hours available in the morning, so I made a visit to Rookwood Necropolis to see what birds were out. On my previous trip, I had spotted a Brown Goshawk nest  and I was wondering if any chicks had hatched. Also – there may be some small birds such as Scarlet Honeyeaters out.

Well – it did not take me long to spot the Brown Goshawk nest and there were indeed chicks. At least two I thought.

But the first bird I saw was this Mistletoebird

Then I looked at the Brown Goshawk nest. It is very high up and very difficult to get views of the nest. But by moving about and trying quite a few locations, I eventually got some shots of the baby Goshawks.

I was hoping one of the parents would be nearby, and that was probably the case, but I gave up looking after a while.

I also had a hard time trying to photograph some of the small birds I had been hearing. Perhaps I should have gone earlier in the morning? They all seemed to be high up in the trees.

I did get a brief view of a Brown Goshawk that seemed to be hunting nearby.

While I was at Rookwood, I was the only bird photographer in the area, and I was hopefully very discrete when photographing the Goshawk nest. It was a long way up in a tree, and my photos were taken at 600 mm and heavily cropped.
