Aboriginal Heritage Walk – 16 November 2023

Back in September, Bob and myself had been on a walk in the Northern Blue Mountains were we visited a number of Aboriginal art caves and some engravings sites. But on that trip, we had run short of time and missed looking for some engraving sites.

On this trip, we had plenty of time to look for the rock engravings. Here are a few photos taken on the walk in –

One spot we visited – we saw this possible stone arrangment.

This engraving in the photo below is very hard to discern. It shows a female figure with her arms outstretched. Later in the day, at other sites, we ended up using some water to wet the rock – which made the engravings much clearer. But we reached this site early on a hot day, and we were reluctant to use our water on it.

Nearby was a possible mundoe (engraved footprint) –

The second site we visited had a set of Kangaroo footprints and some paw prints. We could just make out a single Kangaroo footprint –

Then Bob poured on some of his water. This made an incredible difference – making all the engravings very clear.

Then off to our third site.

This site had another set of Kangaroo Footprints, and they were fairly clear –

With water –

And I was pleased to spot this nice orchid growing on a tree. It is Cymbidium suave

We thought this may be another stone arrangement –

Then we revisited a site we had seen several times before. Here is a mundoe –

And some Emu footprints –

And probably an engraving here –

sharpening grooves –

And again, hard to discern, an engraving of a Kangaroo –

See my post here for much clearer photo of this engraving.

The nest site we visited was a cave with some charcoal art –

This looks like an engraved boomerang in the cave wall –

And another charcoal artwork –

And as it was very close to the fire trail – we visited some sharpening grooves we had seen on the previous trip.
