I joined Enmoore, Stu, Wendy, Martin, Steffy, Su Li, Brent, Jude (NPWS), George and a number of others for a morning of bush regeneration at Barrenjoey. Because of recent rain, and the threat of rain on the day we weeded on the top of the headland – close to the lighthouse.
On the way up to the lighthouse, we passed several groups of Large Tongue Orchids and some Christmas Bells.
We began our weeding – mainly removing lantana, asparagus, nightshade and mother of millions. Our group, and other groups, had weeded this area before, so this time our job was easier. We removed mainly small plants. Generally the bush was looking quite good.
As lunchtime approached, so did a storm. We packed up our gear and bags of weeds and sought shelter in the lighthouse cottage.
Then we walked down to the carpark and to the picnic area, where Chuin Nee and John had prepared a very nice BBQ lunch for the group. This was a great way to finish the day.
After lunch, Steffy noticed a group of stinkhorn fungi growing on the grass nearby. I had not seen this species before – Lysurus mokusin. Like all stinkhorns, their smell attracts flies which spread their spores.
