I joined Brian Everingham and party for a visit to Killalea Regional Park on the coast just south of Shellharbour. This was a trip with the National Parks Association of NSW. In the party was Brian, Sue, Valerie, Elaine and quite few members of the Illawarra Branch of the NPA.
After meeting up at the top car park, near the cafe, we set off first for “The Farm” a famous surfing beach.
We then did the walk around the large lagoon near the beach.
White-faced Heron
Here is the view from the back of the lagoon.
Black Swans
Australasian Grebe
Grey Fantails
And then we were back at The Farm.
We had good views of Stack Island –
We then had lunch at the picnic tables near the carpark.
Red Wattlebird
Next, we drove to the southern carpark, and descended to Mystics Beach – another beach well known by the surfing community.
Part way along the beach, we crossed over to the Minnamurra River.
And then walked back through the littoral rainforest.
Black-faced Monarch
Topknot Pigeon
White-bellied Sea Eagle
White-browed Scrubwren
This was a very pleasant day out, and very interesting. Brian went through and explained a lot of the management issues in relation to the regional park. Thanks to Brian for leading the activity, and to Elaine for a lift down and back from Heathcote Station.
