Jugglers and Grand Canyons – 14 December 2023

A very hot day was forecast – and it seemed a good time to visit some canyons in the Blue Mountains. So Bob and myself headed up to Medlow Bath and visited Jugglers Canyon and then Grand Canyon.

We had a great day.

After parking near the airport, we were soon on the old Pilcher Track heading to Jugglers Canyon. It didn’t take long to reach the first abseil.

And here is Bob on the second abseil –

And the third, and last, abseil –

Jugglers canyon was a pleasant start, and it is easy to connect it up with Grand Canyon to fill out the day. We followed the track back up the creek and were soon at the abseil point. Here we found a group of police rescue squad members practising vertical rescue techniques. They soon finished off, and we were soon able to abseil down into the canyon.

Another party had turned up while we were waiting, and they used Bob’s rope to descend –

And then we made our way down the canyon.

The light was quite harsh which made photography impossible in many places. I took these photos just using a phone camera in sections of the canyon lit by reflected light.

At the ned of the canyon, it was nice and cool, and a side creek provided good source of cool waters we stopped for lunch.

Then we made our way up the old Pilcher Track back to Bob’s car. This is the easiest way out of these canyons as the track has many switchbacks – so is an easy gradient. Good on a very hot day!

I was on the lookout for orchids, and eventually spotted a few Horned Orchids –

This was a good start to the canyoning season.
