Back to the Art at West Head – 27 December 2023

My friend Valerie was keen to see some of the abundant Aboriginal art on West Head, and I was more than happy to make another visit. We had a great trip despite some stormy weather.

There are many tracks and fire roads that lead off from the main road on West Head. Aboriginal art sites can be found along many of these.

We parked at one car park, and were soon on our way along a fire road.

Not far along is a well known engraving site –

We then continued along the fire road.

Our next site, was a very good cave gallery. This features many hand stencils – in both red and white ochre.

There is also a boomerang in white ochre –

I used my iDStretch phone app to bring out some of the faint art.

Walking back towards Valerie’s car, we enjoyed some nice wildflowers and insects.

The next site, was one I had looked at with Bob a few days earlier. This time the engravings were very hard to discern.

We then headed to the West Head lookout where we had lunch.

During lunch it started raining, and we had to shelter in Valerie’s car. When the storm passed over, we thought that the engravings would now be a lot clearer being wet. So we set off to see some more.

But the sun and wind meant that much of the rock platforms were now dry.

Some more rain fell, so we returned to the earlier rock platform, and this time the engravings were much clearer.

Here are some mundoes (footprints) –

These fish engravings are quite clear –

More mundoes –

You can see the platform is quite wet.

When I visited this platform earlier with Bob, we had missed a large engraving of an echidna. This time, with a lot of searching, we eventually spotted it –

Another fish engraving –

And some more mundoes –

This had been a very interesting excursion. Many thanks to Valerie for driving and great company on the day.
