Wolli Creek Nature Walk – 2 December 2015

This was another walk organised by Brian Everingham from the National Parks Association. It was on the walks program as a nature and photography walk. Last week, Brian had led a walk along the nearby Cooks River.

We met at Bexley North station and then proceeded down the Two Valleys Track along Wolli Creek.

Not far along our walk, we noticed a lot of white marking on the bark and leaf litter on the ground. Chris, in the party is an expert of birds and powerful owls in particular. After closely examine the white droppings, he thought they would likely be from a powerful owl. Probably an owl had sat on a low branch above and eaten an animal it had killed. The white droppings are from the owl’s urine.

We saw a few other birds and insects as we continued along the track. Soon, we arrived at Bardwell Park and crossed the road to start the next section. After a morning tea break in Girrahween Park, we kept on walking. Not far along we spotted a small cluster of hyacinth orchids.

We then passed the rock climbing crag, and arrived at the flying fox camp. A lot of these creatures were hanging upside down in the trees overlooking Wolli Creek. They are always interesting to photograph.

The last part of our walk was from the Turrella Reserve to Tempe. One interesting feature on this section are a group of old sandstone brick cottages. These used to be workers cottages for a nearby quarry.
