Mudlarks – Cooks River Bird Survey – 9 July 2024

I was up early, and walked down to the Cooks River to join the Mudlarks for their monthly bird survey. This month, the survey was the upstream loop, starting from the Lang Street Bridge.

Before setting out, we saw a Striated Heron fly in and land just upstream of the bridge.

It soon caught a small crab.

We then continued upstream through Ewen Park.

Chestnut Teal

Hoary-headed Grebe

Little Pied Cormorant

Royal Spoonbill

Great Egret

At the Ford Street bushcare site, I took the lower route and missed seeing a Golden Whistler.

A bit further along, there was a Brown Goshawk

It flew into a tree –

Then it got hassled by a Currawong and it flew off.

Eurasian Coot

At he Boat Harbour, we saw this White-faced Heron

After crossing the river, and walking upstream to the Cup and Sacuer Creek Wetlands we saw five King Parrots. Here are some of them –

Magpie Lark

It found a worm –

And it rejected it!

At the Cup and Saucer Creek Wetlands, some more birds –

Dusky Moorhen

Australian Swamphens

Chestnut Teal

Walking back along the south bank, we did not see many more new birds. And as usual we finished with morning tea at Ewen Park. A good start to the day.
