Curra Moors Wildflower Walk – 1 September 2022

Spring had arrived! It was time to visit the wildflowers of the Curra Moors in Royal National Park. Valerie had suggested this as a walk, and I was glad to be able to join her. The display of wildflowers was simply stunning!

At the carpark of the Curra Moors Track, we spotted quite a few Caladenia sp. Orchid. Continue reading

Birds at The Cooks River, Barton Park and Sydney Park – 31 August 2022

This was another day of train and bus strikes, so I decided to head off on my bike, cycling along the Cooks River, and then out to Barton Park. From there, I intended to return via Tempe Reserve and along a new cycleway along Alexandria Canal, and then to Sydney Park before heading for home. I had a good day out – but it was cut a little short by rain once I reached Sydney Park.

My first camera stop was along the Cooks River, at the usual place below Illawarra Road – there was a Sacred Kingfisher sitting in a tree above the river. I snapped a few shots. Continue reading

Birds at Barton Park – 30 August 2022

As days go, this visit to Barton Park was relatively quiet. Not that many birds were out compared to other recent visits. It was quite windy – so it may have been due to that. Also – there were fair few workers around – inside and outside the old stadium.

I was at the park from about 10 am to 3:30 pm. Later in the day, my friend Micheal from the Greenway Birdos turned up and we spent some time photographing a Striated Heron hunting for fish in the Spring St Canal. He offered me a lift home, and on the way we stopped off at the Cooks River and we looked for Kingfishers, but had no success. Continue reading

Malabar Headland Visit – 29 August 2022

Lately, I have been trying to visit Malabar Headland National Park about once each week. The main purpose being to photograph the nesting Peregrine Falcons. This visit started off very quiet, but got a lot more lively a little later.

On the walk in, at the Maroubra Beach car park, I saw a pair of Willie Wagtails harassing three Laughing Kookaburras. Continue reading

Birds at the Central Coast Wetlands – 28 August 2022

It had been a while  since I had been to these Wetlands at the old Pioneer Dairy at Wyong. I had been meaning to make another visit for a while, but had not got around to it for one reason or another. This visit turned out to be relatively quiet. I saw some nice birds – but nothing special.

I walked to the wetlands from Wyong Station, and this has one advantage – about half of the walk is around two sides of the wetlands and you can spot birds that you may not see at the usual spots. Continue reading

Birds at Barton Park – 27 August 2022

After the early morning bird survey along the Greenway, I headed home for lunch, and then headed to Barton Park in the afternoon for some more bird photography. This visit, it was a pair of juvenile Black-shouldered Kites that provided the best subjects.

My previous visit to the park had been relatively quiet. But you can never tell in advance how a visit will go and whether it will be worthwhile.

When I arrived, I spotted this Great Egret at the Landing Lights Wetland – Continue reading

Greenway Bird Survey – 27 August 2022

I took part in the bird survey along the Waratah Mills loop of the Greenway. As usual, the group met outside Waratah Mills light rail station at 7:30 am. Before we set off, it started raining, so we wanted under shelter at the station for a while.

We spotted a nice section of birds during the survey. Nothing unusual. Here are some photos – Continue reading

Bird Photography at the Northern Beaches – 25 August 2022

I spent the day at the Northern Beaches at various venues – Rat Park, Warriewood Wetlands, Irrawong Reserve and then finished at Long Reef Aquatic Reserve.

Here are some photos – Continue reading

Malabar Headland – 24 August 2022

I was joined by Sue for another visit to Malabar Headland. This visit was a lot quieter in terms of action from the Peregrine Falcons and also in the number of other visitors.

We met around 9 am at Maroubra  Beach and walked out onto the headland. The seas were big, which may have contributed to the reason we did not spot any whales. Continue reading

Wolli Creek – Cooks River Walk – 23 August 2022

Another day of Rail chaos. And this time, rain was forecast later in the day – perhaps late morning. So I decided on another local trip and caught a bus to Bexley North and set off down the Two Valleys Track along Wolli Creek.

I stopped to photograph some small birds at Illoura. Here is one of the many Red-browed FinchesContinue reading
