This was an excellent day – walking down into Fairy Dell and then along Magdala Creek to Glenbrook Creek and then upstream to the Lagoon, and then back to Springwood Via Sassafras Gully and Sassafras Gully Road. All along the way I found a fair bit of fungi out.

It had been a while since I had visited Wolli Creek – the nearest bushland to where I live. So I decided to do an afternoon walk from Bexley North down the creek along the Two Valleys Track. I was on the lookout for birds and fungi. The birds were pretty poor all the way along – perhaps because it been raining a lot recently. At first the fungi was also poor, but it got a lot better as I headed downstream.

This bird survey was not cancelled due to bad weather, and we were fortunate to largely escape any rain. But dark gloomy conditions made photography difficult.
We surveyed from Taverners Hill Light Rail Station to Hawthorne Light Rail Station. It was fairly quiet at Taverners Hill, although I had missed seeing a Spotted Pardalote seen by the people that arrived early. We did see this Spotted Dove with part of an egg. Continue reading
I got up early for the Mudlarks Bird Survey along the Cooks River but found it had been cancelled due to bad weather. But the weather did not seem too bad a bit later, and I had been in touch with friend Valerie and Sue and we decided to meet up and head to Barton Park for the morning to see what birds were out.

I will finish my Tasmanian blog posts with a general set of photos taken at or near my sister and brother in law’s property at West Ulverstone. The property is on a hill overlooking an interesting section of coast. They are close to the Three Sisters Nature Reserve and the Goat Island Nature Reserve. Also, on their property are many birds.

This was the day I was flying home to Sydney. But my flight was not till the mid afternoon. So that allowed us enough time to visit another reserve for some more fungi photography. We visited the Upper Natone Reserve, south of Burnie, a place neither my sister or myself had been to before. It was a pleasant rural drive to the Reserve and once there we did a circuit walk around a small lake. The walk took us through a range of forest types.

I would think that the circuit walk would normally take about 30 minutes, but stopping and looking for fungi and then taking photos takes much longer. We only had about 90 minutes available for our wander. This was good for a reasonable visit, but we certainly could have spent more time there. Continue reading
Castra Falls is another place I have found great for fungi. The falls lie in a scenic reserve within a forest planation. There is a loop track that visits series of waterfalls. The track was constructed and is maintained by local volunteers. Many thanks to them for their great work.
This was another outing with my sister. The circuit is near the locality of Nietta between Ulverstone and Leven Canyon. We parked at the start of the track on Gaunts Road and soon made or way towards Silver Falls. This time we competed the circuit walk which ends a short way further along Gaunts Road. On previous visits we have been interrupted by rain. All the way along the track and in particular along the rainforest section below Silver Falls we found fantastic fungi. Continue reading
This day was a bit different to my other days in Tasmania. My sister Alicson and her husband Shane were taking part in a cave rescue practice at the Honeycomb Cave at Mole Creek. It sounded an interesting area, so I went along with them to spend the day exploring the surface environment.
I turned out to be an interesting day, with a nice rainforest creek with plenty of fungi, plenty of birds around and some fascinating limestone features. And there was also some interesting weather with some great rainbows. Continue reading
