After the local Cooks River bird Survey, I joined Valerie and Sue for a trip to Malabar Headland. I had told them about the Peregrine Falcon chick and they were keen to observe it. But when we arrived we had a pleasant surprise. The chick had been joined by its sibling.

Compared to some of my other visits to this wetland at Wyong, this one was relatively quiet.
I was after photos of Emu-wrens and also some of raptors. I did not see any Emu-wrens, but I did some raptors – but none very close. Continue reading
It was really great to finally see a newly fledged Peregrine Falcon chick on this visit. On the previous two years, I had seen chicks about month earlier, and had begun to think that if the breeding pair of Peregrine Falcons had any chicks this year, then that may not have survived.
When I arrived at the nesting area, I soon spotted one of the adult birds. It was perched on one of the usual rocks. Continue reading

I spent a pleasant day out with Valerie and Sue at the Nepean River at Camden and later at Mt Annan Botanic Gardens. We had gone to observe birds.
We found a good variety of birds along the bike path next to the Nepean River at Camden. The highlight was seeing a Grey Goshawk chick in its nest. The nest was on the far side of the river, well away from people. Here is the chick after being fed by a parent – Continue reading
Gary had suggested a photographic trip to the Taren Point Shorebird Reserve. The mist was planned for the afternoon when the tide would be falling and some migratory birds should be showing up. I deiced to join him, but would start off earlier and cycle there via the Cooks River Cycleway and the Botany Bay Cycleway. The weather was perfect – a warm sunny day but with a nice cool sea breeze.

I had intended a few times recently to make visits but had put the trips off due to unsuitable weather and other factors such as the tide being right for an alternate place. I spent a couple of hours visiting the Cooks River to check the status again of some local birds. The trip ended up being very similar to my previous visit. More Striated Herons and Tawny Frogmouths.
At the Boat Harbour, probably the same Striated Heron I had seen on my last visit was there again – hunting for fish. A little bit further away this time, as the tide was lower. Continue reading
