Around this time last year (actually a bit later in the year), I had made a number of trips to Rookwood Necropolis to photograph the birds there. Many thanks to Simin for suggesting this location, as I had not been there for a few years before that. The highlights last season had been seeing a flock of Scarlet Honeyeaters, and some Spotted Pardalotes close up, and then watching a family of Brown Goshawks chicks fledge and grow up.
So, I wondered what smaller birds were around, and would the Brown Goshawks be nesting again?
When I arrived, I walked to the spot where I had seen the Brown Goshawks last year. I soon spotted one –
Here are a few more photos –
It later flew into a pine tree, and was very hard to spot, and impossible to photograph. The nest they had used last year was not there. The pair had also made a few extra nests – and they seemed to have gone too.
So, I then went on a bit of a walk through a bushand section, seeing what other birds were around. I could hear quite a few calls, but none seemed to want their photo taken.
Walking back, I spotted a Black-shouldered Kite –
It flew around a bit looking for prey, then landed on top of a tree. I walked closer and got into a good position.
Unfortunately, when it took off, it flew out of the area.
I then had a good look for the Brown Goshawks, but had no luck this time. But I think they will be nesting soon.
