Kangaroo Creek Walk – 10 October 2024

I had never walked down the lower section of Kangaroo Creek in Royal National Park. I am talking about the section below The Olympic Pool to where water banks up from Audley Weir. I had suggested it as place to visit to Bob, and we had talked about it over the years, but the weather had been unsuitable or something else sounded better. But we finally got around to doing it.

We traveled down the Heathcote by train and then started off along the track to The Karloo Pool.

Very early on, in fact in sight of the station ,we spotted a Beard Orchid –

Purple Beard Orchid – Calochilus robertsonii

And we stopped to look at the Aboriginal sharpening grooves at the first creek crossing –

We then followed the rough track downstream towards the Olympic Pool.

We stopped for a short break at the Olympic Pool

Now into the section that neither of us had walked. It was not hard going. The rough track continued, mostly on the true right bank, although we did cross twice to the true left side.

The creek is interesting at this big bend –

Just past the bend the creek drops a few metres. This happened again lower downstream at another bend.

Now on the true left.

And now we have crossed for the third time, at the track from Robertsons Knoll.

At the junction with Engadine Creek we stopped for another break. It was too early for lunch.

We then headed up the track to Engadine Station, stopping part way up for lunch.

Rufous Whistler

The whole walk had been very pleasant, and it was good to finally visit this last part of Kangaroo Creek.

We had sufficient time, to de-train at Como and visit another Heritage Horse Trough. This is a Annis and George Bills Horse Trough at Crane Bay Reserve only 5 minutes from the station.
