Sue had suggested a late afternoon picnic out on Malabar Headland. She invited Valerie, Alana and myself. We met on the Headland with plenty of nice food to share. But there was a nice bonus! A newly fledged Peregrine Falcon chick.
On the walk out from Mamabar with Valerie, we heard, then spotted a Rufous Whistler –
Once out on the cliffs, we looked in the usual spots for perched Peregrine Falcons, and spotted the juvenile –
It settled down for a snooze –
Then a parent arrived and perched lower down –
We were having our picnic when the juvenile woke up.
It then demonstrated its flying skills –
It landed on top of the cliffs.
And then it took off –
A parent had arrived with food. But the parent seemed to be doing all the eating.
The parent left, and now the juvenile could eat.
The parent did some amazing flying –
And then landed –
The other parent flew over –
Meanwhile the juvenile was still eating.
The second parent landed –
The juvenile was still fished its meal –
It was time for all of us to head home. We had enjoyed a great picnic, and also a fantastic display of flying from the Pergrines, and also seen a new member of their family.
