Greenway Bird Survey – 9 January 2025

I joined in on the bird survey along the Hawthorne Canal section of the Greenway. As usual, the group met at 7:30 am at Taverners Hill Light Rail Station.

On this occasion, it was relatively quiet at the station.

Lower down on the path, we saw this Brush Turkey roosting in a tree –

On their previous survey, a month earlier, we had observed three White-faced Heron chicks in a nest, in a tree along the Greenway. We now saw the nest was empty. The chicks had now fledged, and we saw them further along near the footbridge.

Masked Lapwing

Australasian Figbird

Rainbow Lorikeet

And we spotted a juvenile Brush Turkey

Red Wattlebird

The survey ended with morning tea at a local cafe. Then I walked down to Marion Street to catch a bus to Abbotsford. I was hoping to see some Godwits at Hen and Chicken Bay.
