More Cooks River Birds – 19 March 2025

Sue and Valerie joined me for a morning walk down a section of the Cooks River. We walked down from Illawarra Road to the Princes Highway.

I arrived a bit earlier than the others, and walked down ashore way and spotted a Sacred Kingfisher perched on a tree above the water.

It flew downstream to another perch –

It then flew upstream again to near its original perch –

But it didn’t stay for long. Off it went back down the River.

After meeting the others, we walked downstream to the Striated Heron nest. The two nestlings were busy exploring the mangroves near the nest. They seemed quite agile.

We sat down and watched them quietly.

We then set off downstream again. Some more birds –

Magpie Lark

Little Black Cormorant

Red Wattlebird

And we spotted second Sacred Kingfisher at Gough Whitlam Park.

High above Pelican flew past.

Magpie Lark

I photographed this wasp at Kendrick Park –

And a pair of Wood Ducks
