Long Reef has been a very good location lately for bird photography, particularly for Ospreys. So with Malabar Headland closed off due to nearby shooting, I headed up to spend the day at Long Reef.

I arrived at the lookout on the headland around 10:45, and I spotted two Ospreys circling below the clifftops.
Here is one –

I then went down to the rock platform level. One of the ospreys was hunting for fish nearby. The tide was high.

It pulled out of its dive.

Then it dived again –

It didn’t get a fish.

So it tried again –

It pulled out.

Then another Osprey arrived on the scene.

One dived –

It pulled out, but must have dived again out of sight, as it flew back with a fish –

The other one was also hunting for fish –

It flew out to sea, but flew back with some seaweed.

Then two more Ospreys appeared –

An unsuccessful dive –

A passing Great Cormorant –

An Osprey flew overhead –

White-faced Heron

Pied Cormorant

Pied Cormorant

An Osprey landed on the island with a fish –

Compared to other recent visits, it had been a bit below average in terms of action. But it was still pleasant to spend time on the headland. I headed for home about 4 pm.
