Kings Tableland Walk – 17 July 2025

With a forecast of good weather, Bob and myself, changed plans, and headed out to Kings Tableland again. On previous trips to the Tableland, our main aim was to look for Aboriginal sites. On this trip, our goal was to climb a mountain part way along a ridge. So Aboriginal sites were a secondary consideration. But, as it turned out we had to pass one site that we knew about, and found two other sites that we did not know about.

As usual, we started with a fire road walk –

A fair way along, we stopped to look for a nearby Aboriginal site. We soon found some sharpening grooves –

And another set –

But the site was more of a hanging swamp with a few open rocky sections than the large rock platform we had been expecting.

Air photos had led us to think there may have been other rock platforms nearby, but they turned out to relatively open areas of low vegetation.

Back on the fire road, we looked at a small overhang we could see nearby.

It turned out to have a fair bit of faint charcoal art.

This may be red ochre –

We soon left the fire road, and followed a scrubby ridge. On the way we looked fore more caves.

Here is one cave we checked –

Back on the ridge, we came across a large open rock platform, and there were a lot of sharpening grooves. We counted between 50 and 60 in total.

There was also this stone arrangement –

And then we resumed heading for our mountain.

We crossed one last saddle –

And then up through some easy cliffs –

The views from the summit were not that great –

On the walk back to Bob’s car, we checked out a few more overhangs without finding any more art. This sheltered overhang would have probably been used as an occupation cave –
