Malabar Headland – 21 July 2025

Sue joined me for a nice day spent out on Malabar Headland. The weather was very pleasant, but there was very little activity from the resident Peregrine Falcons, until we started walking back to Maroubra Beach.

On the walk out, there were the usual New Holland Honeyeaters

Then we stalled down to wait for Peregrine falcon to appear. We had scanned the cliffs and had not seen any perched birds.

Below, we spotted a sleeping Seal

And we spotted some distant Humpback Whale activity –

And the Australian Gannets were hunting for fish –

Back to the sleeping Seal

And here is a Black-browed Albatross

We then met up with Alana, on her daily walk. We had a chat, and then started walking back towards  Maroubra Beach. We keep a lookout for Peregrine Falcons and other raptors. And then we spotted a Peregrine Falcon perched on the cliffs below us, with prey.

I moved to another spot to get a better and closer view. The prey was a Red Wattlebird.

There were a lot of feathers!

And back around to the other side again.

It took off with its prey.

It had flown off in the direction of its scrape (nest).

While we watched the Peregrine Falcon, it had not eaten very much of the prey, but rather spent time removing feathers. Perhaps it was processing it for its mate who may be sitting on eggs in their scrape? I hope so.

We keep walking back towards Maroubra Beach. At Magic Point, Alana spotted a Nankeen Kestrel. it was perched on one of its favourite spots.

We could get quite close without distressing it.

We waited to see if it would take off.

That was a nice finish to the day. It had started off very quietly, but the end had been very good.

While watching the Peregrine Falcon, I shot some video. Here is the finished video on YouTube –
