Wolli Creek Birds – 28 December 2025

I visited Wolli Creek Regional Park to photograph birds. I stayed mainly near the Bray Avenue Wetlands and Paperbark Creek.

I could hear quite a few birds around Paperbark Creek, but none came out of the scrub for photos, so I headed then to the Bray Avenue Wetlands. Again, I could hear the sounds of quite a few birds, and I eventually spotted a Sacred Kingfisher perched high in a tree.

It was calling out.

I was able to follow the Kingfisher at first, as it flew to different perches.

I then lost it, but could still hear its call. Luckily, Philip, a passing bird photographer, who happened to be cycling past could also hear the Kingfisher and stopped for a look. He also told me it was nesting in the area and pointed out its nest hole.

Philip, then had to leave, so I waited, at a discrete distance away from the nest to see if any food was delivered.

I had to wait a while, but my patience was rewarded. A Sacred Kingfisher, flew down and perched near the nest hole and made a few calls. It then flew to the hole.

It looked around a bit, then went inside.

I waited quietly for a while to see if it would re-emerge, but it didn’t. So perhaps it had returned to sit on eggs?

As I left, I photographed this New Holland Honeyeater
