More Cooks River Birds – 11 February 2026

Another hot day was forecast. I was keen to head outside, so caught a bus to Canterbury, then walked the short dance down the Cooks River to the Boat Harbour. There is plenty of if shade there, and I had timed my visit for the low tide when I hoped some birds may be hunting for fish.

Pelican

I could hear the alarm calls from Noisy Miners and looked up and spotted this Brown Goshawk flying upstream.

Masked Lapwing

Little Corellas

An Australasian Darter was hunting for fish –

Magpie Lark

Then a Little Heron arrived and started hunting –

It first had a drink.

There seemed to be a lot of little fish in the Boat Harbour judging by the ripples I could see, but the Heron didn’t lunge for any.

Here is did lunge, but not for fish. It caught a dragonfly –

Then it lunges for another dragonfly and misses –

Then the Pelican arrived.
