This was a pleasant day out, accompanied by Digi Dave. We headed to the southern part of Royal National Park with our cameras.
Our intention was to photograph fungi at Bola and Palona Creeks, but on our way we stopped off at National Falls. There I photographed the upper falls.
Then to Lady Carrington Drive. We intend to go to Palona Creek first, but on our way, at Bola Creek I noticed some red waxcaps, and while photographing them I noticed some vert interesting fungi that I had not seen before. Later, when I got home, I sent photo of them to people, and Ray and Elma Kearney recognised them as Cordyceps capitata. What makes this particular fungus unusual is that instead of parasitising an insect like other species of Cordyceps, it parasitises a truffle.
When we arrived at the Palona Creek Picnic Area, we looked for fungi but did not find a real lot out, so after a short while we headed back to Bola Creek. Things there were better, but not brilliant. It looked like the fungi season is coming to an end.
Here are some of what we found –
One unusual find was a cluster of deep purple waxcaps coming up. They looked a bit like Porpolomopsis lewelliniae – but their colour is wrong, so that species is probably ruled out.
More photos of the fungi are on my website here.
