Ospreys at Long Reef – 6 April 2026

I spent a pleasant, but somewhat frustrating day at Long Reef on the Northern Beaches. My main aim (as usual lately) was to photograph the local Ospreys. In particular, I wanted some good photos of them diving for fish.

When I arrived, I looked down from the top, and spotted an Osprey perched on some roots. So I descended to get into a better position for photos. There were four other bird photographers nearby waiting for the Osprey to take off. I knew one of them – Adam.

The Osprey showed signs it was about to fly –

But, it stayed on the perch.

A fair while later, more signs it was getting ready to fly.

And then another Osprey flew past.

But the perched one stayed put.

More wing stretching.

There was another Osprey out on the island 0

And then it caught a fish –

The close, perched Osprey stayed where it was.

Another Osprey flew past.

The perched one called to it, but stayed put.

The Osprey with the fish, on the island, was being harassed by Kelp Gulls.

It flew past.

By this time, the perched Osprey had taken off and had flown out of sight.
