Raptors at Long Reef – 19 April 2026

Another day spent photographing the raptors (mainly Ospreys) at Long Reef on the Northern Beaches.

It was a good day, but somewhat frustrating. I spent a long time watching the Opsreys and I did get some reasonable photos of them diving for fish, but none of the ones I was watching actually caught a fish. Perhaps because many of them are juveniles and simply not that good at fishing?

When I arrived, I spotted this Osprey perched on roots lower down.

I walked down to the lower level and around to the osprey, but was distracted by this young Little Pied Cormorant demanding food from its parent.

Then the perched Osprey seedily took off. It had spotted a nearby fish.

It did not get the fish, and circled around back to its perch.

Another Osprey cruised past it.

And a Willie Wagtail was doing ist best to move the Osprey out of its territory.

Then two Ospreys flew past. One with a stick that the other seemed to want.

An Osprey was hunting for fish again –

But it pulled out of its dive.

Two Opsreys having a squabble –

Some more fishing –

Not successful.

Another attempt.

Another failure….

One Osprey flew past with a fish.

Then a new raptor arrived, a Nankeen Kestrel. It did not stay long.

Another Osprey flew past with a fish.

One of the other Ospreys –

More attempts at fishing –

A Gray-tailed Tattler was doing better –

Back to the Ospreys –

And a last photo of a very distant Osprey which has a fish –
