I had thought about a trip to Wolli Creek to check out the fungi or a trip along the Cooks River to photograph birds, and the easiest thing to do was to do both. I first visited the Cooks River in the morning when the tide was low which is better for the kingfishers hunting for crabs.

I caught a bus going down Illawarra Road to the river and then slowly walked downstream towards Gough Whitlam Park on the true right bank.
A short way down, many Cormorants were drying their wings, while perched in a tree, overhanging the water.

I then spotted a Sacred Kingfisher land in that same overhanging tree, but when it realised it was full of Cormorants it flew off. Fortunately, I spotted it again.

But it didn’t stay still for long.

At Gough Whitlam Park, I soon spotted the Tawny Frogmouths –

I also spotted a Sacred Kingfisher in the mangroves at Gough Whitlam Park.
