It was time for another trip to visit Long Reef on the Northern Beaches.
It turned out to be quite a good day, with some interesting bird behaviour.
The first bird that appeared in my lens was a Magpie. It was hunting in the grass.
It had found small grub.
And then I turned my attention to a Nankeen Kestrel. It too was hunting.
It dived out of sight below a bush. It soon continued looking for prey.
I didn’t photograph its dive, but it did appear again with some small prey.
Then an Osprey appeared.
The Osprey had also just dived, unsuccessfully for a fish, and was centrifuging itself to shed water.
Another dive –
My view was blocked, but the Osprey appeared again with a fish.
Another Osprey arrived.
But then the Osprey’s nemesis appeared. A White Bellied Sea Eagle.
The local Magpies tried to discourage the Sea Eagle.
Back to the Nankeen Kestrel –
And then a second Nankeen Kestrel appeared.
It looked like it was fighting the first one, but I think this is a courtship display.
And then an Osprey flew past.
The two Kestrels were still having their courtship “fight” –
It was about time to head home. I walked around the northern side of the Headland. One Osprey was perched on a dead tree –
A second Osprey flew past and perched a bit further along.
