Kangaroo Creek Walk – 17 October 2018

Earlier in the year I had walked down Kangaroo Creek from Waterfall Station to the Karloo Pool, then walked out to Heathcote. On that trip the waterlevel was extremely low – the creek and the waterfalls along the way were hardly flowing, so I wanted to return when there was more water around.

Kangaroo Creek Falls

With recent rain, I thought it may be worth another look. On this trip I was accompanied by Bob.

We got off the train at Waterfall, and walked a short distance along the Uloola Falls Track to where the track to Kangaroo Creek Falls starts. This is a much less made track, but is not too hard to follow. It passes through thick forest and crosses a few small creeks before following on ledges on the true right side of Kangaroo Creek. I think it took us roughly an hour  of walking to reach Kangaroo Falls.

The flow this time, although not that high, was a lot better than on my earlier visit. The camera and tripod came out.

Below the falls is a nice swimming pool. The water looked very clear and inviting. To get down to the pool, you cross the creek above the waterfall, then it is an easy scramble down to the bottom.

After a few more photos, we kept following the track downstream, It is now a lot more indistinct, but not too hard to follow. we did loose it a few times, but looking around, we soon found it again.

I think it is roughly about two more hours of walking needed to reach the Karloo Pool. With a bit of storage time for photos, it took us a bit longer. And there is some nice things to photograph along the way.

The creek alternates between long deep pools that are separated by rocky slab sections. Some of the rocky sections have small cascades and waterfalls.

Lower down, there is one section where the creek passes through a small gorge. On my last trip – I could walk down this – the creek was not flowing. This time we followed a track high on a ledge on the right bank.

Below the gorge, the creek is a bit rougher, and the track is harder to follow. In a few places it follows the left bank for short distances.

The track improves a fair bit when you get close to the Karloo Pool.

At the Karloo Pool, we stopped for a leisurely lunch. I had a quick swim – the water was very clear and inviting, bit also a little on the cold side.

We finished the walk by heading up the track to Heathcote Station. Here are some fo the wildflowers we saw along the way –
