Wolli Creek Nature Walk – 18 January 2019

More heatwave conditions! Sydney had been experiencing an unpleasant spell of very hot weather. Too hot to do the walk to and from many swimming holes. But it still nice to get out. So I thought I would do a short easy walk down part of Wolli Creek, along the Two Valleys Track between Bexley North and Turrella.

The hot weather seems to make the birds harder to see. I could hear a few, but most seemed to be resting high in the trees.

Robber Fly

I did see a number of spiders.

And some fungi was out in the darker parts of the forest.

A few Superb Fairy-wrens were out. Here is one –

And in one spot that I have seen them before were a cluster of Hyacinth Orchids. Look for the spider, with a smaller creature on its back, on the first flower.

I spent a bit of time at the Flying Fox Camp. I thought that most of the babies would by now be independent but I observed quite a few clinging on to their mothers. This must be hard for mum in the very hot conditions.

I saw a few of the mothers flying with their young, but it is hard to get good photographs of this. Most of the fliers were males.

I was also hoping that some may fly down and dunk in the creek to cool off. None did while I was there. Perhaps they may do this later in the day when it is warmer?

Below the camp were some juvenile Red-browed Finches –

And a Blue Triangle Butterfly –
