Birds in the Warriewood Area – 21 May 2019

I made a visit to Warriewood Wetlands, Irrawong Reserve and some of the sporting fields near Narrabeen Lagoon to photograph birds. I was lucky this trip finding plenty of subjects.

At Warriewood Wetlands, I spotted quite a few birds. Here are some –

Grey Fantail

Yellow Faced Honeyeater

Lewins Honeyeater

Superb Fairy-wren

Bell Miner

In Irrawong Reserve, I could not help noticing some people looking up at a large bird perched in a tree. It was being harassed by quite a few other birds. It was a magnificent Powerful Owl. It was not that high up, but was obscured by foliage but I managed to get some photos of it –

And some of the other birds in the Reserve. A Spotted Pardalote and an Eastern Yellow Robin.

And also a Water Dragon.

I was also fortunate to meet up with Margaret and Kerry – local bird watchers.

After lunch, I walked back the same way, and continued down Mullet Creek all the way to Narrabeen Lagoon. I then walked along the side of the lagoon. In a nearby sporting field, I spotted a Nankeen Kestrel perched on a post. I walked over closer to it and go a series of photos –

when it perched on a high light, it was encouraged to leave by a group of Noisy Miners.

I then saw in the distance a raptor flying high. It was am Osprey and was carrying a fish it had caught.

It was too far away for a good photo, but I was able to see the direction it had gone. I waled that way to another sporting field and soon spotted  a nest high up on one of the lights. The Osprey was in the nest, but I saw it fly off and perch on a lower level. It then started to eat the fish.

I also saw a flock of Galahs eating grass seeds in the field –

Back to the Osprey. I took advantage of it high position, and the eerie sun caused by hazard reduction burns. I walked to get some photos of the Osprey and the Sun –

And a few more before I left the area and headed back to the bus stop.  I waited to see if the osprey would take off when it had finished eating. I did, but my photos were not that good. The bird had a distracting background behind it –

And from a distance, I could see there were a pair of them.

One Response to Birds in the Warriewood Area – 21 May 2019

  1. Ian Gordon says:

Nice, I was there at Warriewood early in the morning of the 21st, didn’t see the Ospreys but did spot an Azure kingfisher on mullet creek for the 2nd time, still not getting a quality image, also spotted the Golden whistler and very much almost stepped on a red bellied black snake! His tail whipped my leg as he darted off !
