Greenway, Botanic Gardens and Coast – 11 December 2019

This was a full day spent at three venues – the Greenway, between Taverners Hill and Hawthorne with the Greenway Bird Group, then I went to the Royal Botanic Gardens at Sydney to look for the resident Powerful Owls. I had not luck in than endeavour, but I took the opportunity to have another look at the amazing Carnivorous Plant display in the Calyx. I then caught a ferry to Watsons Bay and walked along the Coastal Path to Dover Heights.

Here are some of the birds we saw –

Australian Figbirds

And a St Andrew’s Cross Spider.

I wandered around a bit looking for the pair of resident Powerful Owls – but could not spot them on this visit. Here are some other scenes –

Then I went into the Carnivorous Plants display in the Calyx.

Watsons Bay to Dover Heights

I had recently seen an online map of the new Manly to Bondi Walk. And I noticed there was a large loop walk at South Head. It looked like a new track had been built between Hornby Lighthouse and Gap Bluff. When I arrived at The Gap, I found this was artists license. No new track – that section of the coast is still military land and fenced off.

I continued south along the Coastal Path. The only infrastructure on the new Manly to Bondi Walk is some new waymarks.

At Christison Park, I spotted the Nankeen Kestrel  that I had seen on previous visits. I paused to get some photos while it hunted.

I then continued to Rodney Reserve at Dover Heights. I spotted no more raptors. Then I caught a bus to Bondi Junction and a train home.
