Fungi at Hazelbrook and Lawson – 18 March 2020

After finding a lot of good fungi and slime moulds out at Springwood the previous day, I thought it may be worthwhile visiting the waterfall tracks south of Hazelbrook and Lawson a but higher up the mountains.

I found some interesting species, but not as may as I would have expected based on how much I found nearby at Springwood one day earlier.

Waterfall below Terrace Falls

At Hazelbrook, I walked down Terrace Falls Road, then along the fire road, and the track down to Victor Falls and Terrace Falls. I keep on going, all the way to Bedford Creek. I followed the track upstream – and checked out the rainforest area – I think it is called Picnic Point. This was whereI found a fair bit of fungi. Most of it cream coloured coral fungi. Some of it growing on soil, some growing on logs. Here is a selection –

I only found one waxcap. A single Hygrocybe miniata

Here is a lichen –

And I am not sure if this is a developing slime mould –

On the way out, I photographed one of the lower waterfalls downstream of Terrace Falls.

Nearby was a nice Artomyces colensoi

Higher up the track was this nice Russula persanguinea

I then walked along the fire road to the lower carpark for the South Lawson Waterfall Circuit. I had lunch at the picnic table, and then set off along the track. There was not that much out.

Some more interesting things –

The above picture is of a large spine fungus. I think it is Hydnellum auratile. Below is a nice pair of Gilled Boletes. I think they are Phylloporus rhodoxanthus.

Near the base of the last waterfall, Adelina Falls, I spotted a small cluster of two beautiful fresh waxcaps. I am not sure what they are. Perhaps Hygrocybe polychroma.
